AI Chip Rally Reverses Again as Micron, Intel and SanDisk Slide in Pre-Market Trade

FAZTIMES | Global Markets | Technology

The AI chip trade took another sharp turn on Tuesday as major U.S. semiconductor stocks came under renewed selling pressure in pre-market trading. Micron Technology, Intel, SanDisk and other AI-linked chip companies fell sharply, reversing much of the optimism that had driven the sector higher just a day earlier.

The bigger story is not simply a one-day decline. It is how quickly investor sentiment around AI-related stocks is switching between aggressive buying and profit-taking.

AI Chip Rally Loses Momentum

Micron was among the stocks hit hardest, while SanDisk and several other semiconductor and data-storage companies also moved lower before the U.S. market opened. The broader Philadelphia Semiconductor Index subsequently came under heavy pressure, with chip stocks reversing the gains recorded during Monday's rally.

The reversal came after a particularly strong session on Monday. Micron had gained about 4.1%, while SanDisk jumped 8.9% and Western Digital rose 5.4%, reflecting renewed enthusiasm for AI-driven demand for memory and storage.

Why Investors Are Pulling Back

One major factor is profit-taking. Several semiconductor stocks have delivered extraordinary gains this year, leaving valuations vulnerable whenever sentiment changes.

The sector has also been dealing with rising U.S. Treasury yields. Higher yields can make expensive growth stocks less attractive and increase concerns about whether current AI valuations already price in too much future growth.

At the same time, geopolitical tensions surrounding the U.S.-Iran situation have pushed oil prices higher and added to inflation concerns, putting additional pressure on global markets. U.S. stock futures were already pointing lower before the opening bell on Tuesday.

From AI Euphoria to AI Caution

The latest move comes after a remarkable period for semiconductor stocks.

Memory companies in particular have benefited from expectations that AI data centres will require enormous amounts of high-performance memory and storage. On Monday, investors aggressively bought Micron, SanDisk and Western Digital after renewed optimism around AI spending.

But the speed of the reversal highlights the market's growing sensitivity to valuation and expectations.

Earlier this year, chip stocks experienced similarly violent swings. Reuters reported in July that a sharp sell-off in chipmakers had raised concerns about the sustainability of the AI-driven market rally and leveraged positions built around high-flying semiconductor stocks.

The AI Demand Story Has Not Disappeared

The sell-off does not necessarily mean investors have abandoned the long-term AI opportunity.

Demand for memory, storage and computing infrastructure remains closely linked to the expansion of AI data centres. Analysts continue to point to tight memory markets and strong demand as reasons for optimism around companies such as Micron.

The problem for investors is increasingly price versus expectations.

When semiconductor companies rise rapidly on expectations of years of AI spending, even a small shift in sentiment can trigger large moves. That is exactly what the latest reversal demonstrates.

The Bigger Picture

The AI investment boom is creating a new group of winners beyond traditional AI leaders such as Nvidia.

Memory and storage companies including Micron, SanDisk and Western Digital have increasingly become part of the AI trade because modern data centres require enormous amounts of memory and storage infrastructure. Indian investors have also been showing greater interest in these companies, according to recent data cited by NDTV Profit.

But the market is becoming increasingly volatile. Semiconductor stocks can move sharply on changes in interest rates, AI spending expectations, geopolitical developments, supply concerns and profit-taking.

For now, Tuesday's reversal is less a verdict on AI demand and more a reminder that AI-related stocks have become one of the market's most crowded and volatile trades.

The Bottom Line

The latest sell-off in Micron, Intel, SanDisk and other chip stocks shows how quickly sentiment can reverse in the AI trade. Strong AI infrastructure demand remains intact, but elevated valuations, rising bond yields, geopolitical uncertainty and aggressive profit-taking are making semiconductor stocks increasingly volatile.

FAQs

Q. Why are AI chip stocks falling?
The decline reflects a combination of profit-taking, high valuations, rising Treasury yields, broader technology weakness and geopolitical uncertainty.

Q. Which chip stocks were affected?
Micron, Intel, SanDisk, Marvell and several other AI-linked semiconductor and infrastructure companies came under pressure.

Q. Did these stocks rise before the latest fall?
Yes. Monday saw a strong rally in several memory and storage stocks. Micron gained 4.1%, while SanDisk jumped 8.9% and Western Digital gained 5.4%.

Q. Does the fall mean the AI boom is ending?
Not necessarily. AI data-centre investment continues to support demand for computing, memory and storage. The current move is more closely linked to valuation, market positioning and changing investor sentiment.

Q. Why are memory companies important to AI?
AI data centres require large quantities of high-performance memory and storage, making companies such as Micron and SanDisk increasingly exposed to AI infrastructure spending.
