Joshua Mahoney, chief market analyst at Scope Markets, said the quick response limited both financial and reputational damage. "These hiccups are inevitable for a company as large as Amazon," Mahoney told Media. “What matters most is how fast they can fix it—and in this case, the response has been remarkably efficient.”

Mahoney added that while Amazon’s short-term performance could lag behind some of its “Magnificent 7” tech peers, the long-term outlook remains strong.

“AWS holds over 30% of the global cloud market, and that dominance isn’t going away anytime soon,” he noted. “Customers are too deeply integrated to jump ship.”

Rivals Pounce with Humor

While Amazon frantically worked to restore its network, competitors quickly capitalized on the opportunity. Hetzner, a Germany-based cloud provider, took a playful jab on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), posting:

“Guess who's up?”

Although the outage originated in the United States, its impact was acutely felt in the United Kingdom, where key financial, media, and travel systems experienced downtime. Cori Crider, executive director of the Future of Technology Institute, criticized the UK’s overreliance on U.S.-based tech giants.

Marek Szustak, an IT security official at eSky Group, concurred, characterizing the event as a crucial reminder.

“Companies must build systems that can survive a failure in one region or provider,” Szustak said. “Resilience should be as important as cost savings.”

Snapchat Struggles to Fully Recover

While most AWS-linked services began returning to normal by Monday afternoon, Snapchat continued to face performance issues.

According to data from Downdetector, reports of app failures declined sharply overnight but remained above normal levels. Many users said images were taking longer to load, and some reported missing chat histories.

AWS engineers said that a networking system controlling a database product was at the center of the problem.

Junade Ali, a fellow at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, said the issue “should be fully resolved within hours” unless deeper complications emerge.
