The European Union (EU) said on Thursday that they are going to fight back against the taxes that the U.S. has put on its goods. They're taking the U.S. to the World Trade Organization (WTO) because they think these taxes on things like cars and car parts are unfair.

The EU also said they're thinking about putting their taxes on about 95 billion euros (that's a lot of money!) worth of goods coming from the U.S. This would happen if they can't make a trade deal with the U.S.

The list of American things that could get taxed includes many farm and factory products, as well as things like bourbon and tequila. These drinks have been a point of argument before, with U.S. President Donald Trump even saying in March he might put a huge 200% tax on alcohol coming from the EU. They didn't say exactly how high the new taxes from the EU would be.

Right now, the EU is trying to talk to the U.S. to avoid Trump's plan to put a 20% tax on almost everything the U.S. buys from Europe. Trump has also already put a 25% tax on all cars that are imported, which hurts a lot of European car companies, and a 25% tax on steel and aluminum.

The EU's list of things they might tax also includes parts for airplanes and cars, which would affect big American companies like Boeing that make planes.

The EU said very clearly that it thinks the U.S. taxes are breaking the rules of the WTO.

They said that the EU wants to show that the rules that everyone agreed on are important and that no country, not even the U.S., can just ignore them.

To start this fight, the EU will officially ask for talks with the U.S. at the WTO.

The head of the EU's group that deals with these things, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Thursday that "the EU wants to find a way to make a deal with the U.S. We think there are good deals that would help people and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic."

A big boss at a company that rents out airplanes, John Plueger, said that if Europe stops taking planes from Boeing because of these taxes, it would be a big problem, especially since China might also do the same thing.

He also said that if these taxes stay for a long time, it might make American airplane makers want to build factories in other countries so they can sell their planes without these taxes.

The EU had already said they would put taxes on about 21 billion euros worth of American goods in April because of the taxes on metals, but they waited to see if they could make a deal. If they can't make a deal now, these taxes, which are mostly 25%, on things like corn, wheat, motorcycles, and clothes from the U.S. could still happen.

The UK just made a trade deal with the U.S., even with all these tax problems going on, but we don't know all the details yet.

When talking about the UK deal, Trump said, "We plan to make a deal with Europe."

He also said again that the EU treats the U.S. "unfairly" when it comes to trade because the U.S. buys more goods from the EU than they sell to them. He added, "They want to make a deal. We're talking to them right now."
