A recent report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says India has become the top country in the world for rapid digital payments, thanks to the Unified Payments Interface, or UPI. In June 2024 alone, UPI processed 18.39 billion transactions. 39 billion transactions, totaling ₹24.03 lakh crore. “UPI has made payments accessible to everyone. Whether you’re a tea seller in Lucknow or a software engineer in Bengaluru, you can send or receive money in seconds, all for free,” says Ramesh Jain, a fintech expert from Mumbai. According to Al Jazeera, UPI now makes up 85% of all digital transactions in India and 50% of the world’s real-time payments.

Including small businesses in the digital economy is one of UPI’s biggest achievements. Over 65 million merchants now use the platform, and most of them are small or informal businesses.

What Was Behind the Boom?

This big rise in digital transactions didn’t happen by chance. Years of digital efforts, supported by government plans and collaboration between the public and private sectors, made it possible.

According to a report by the IMF, India’s success comes from a special “model of digital public infrastructure.

This model mixes open access with strong control. Projects like Aadhaar, Jan Dhan Yojana, and Digital India helped build this foundation.

Dr. Shweta Bansal, a digital policy expert, says, “The UPI system is built on openness and the ability to work with different systems. It isn’t controlled by just a few big companies, which makes it easier to grow and more accessible for everyone.”

By connecting 675 banks and making it easy for them to work together, UPI offers something most other countries haven’t achieved: a fully unified payment system that is simple, quick, and free to use. India is not just celebrating its achievements at home. The UPI system is now working in seven countries, including the UAE, Singapore, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Mauritius, and France. This move into Europe shows India is reaching out globally.

As BBC News reported, France has become the first European nation to accept UPI payments. This means Indian tourists and residents can now make real-time payments using their Indian bank accounts while in France.

Anjali Mehta, a cyber law expert in Delhi, explains, “There is still a need to teach people, especially in rural areas, how to avoid fraud and use digital services safely." However, by implementing effective awareness campaigns, we can resolve these issues.

On the positive side, the model India has developed is now being looked at by other countries. Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia are exploring similar systems inspired by India's success.
