Mercury, a shiny metal that was once used in thermometers and batteries, is now added illegally to some beauty products to block melanin—the pigment that gives skin color. By stopping melanin production, these creams give a false look of fair skin. But the cost of this fake glow can be very harmful.

Dermatologists say these creams can thin skin, make it sensitive, and increase infection risk. When people stop using the product, they often face a problem called "reverse pigmentation," where the skin gets darker, starts peeling, or develops uneven patches.

Mercury exposure isn’t just about skin problems—it goes deeper than that. Doctors say that mercury poisoning mainly affects the kidneys and the nervous system. Mercury poisoning can lead to symptoms such as shaking, memory problems, and irreversible kidney failure.

Doctors in many countries have noticed more people getting a condition called nephrotic syndrome. This happens when the kidneys leak important proteins into the urine. Al Jazeera found hundreds of listings on big online marketplaces for skin-lightening creams that include mercury. These creams are often advertised with promises like “instant glow” or “advanced whitening” and are sold worldwide without proper checks.

In India and other parts of South Asia, this problem is very common. “Many small sellers buy these creams in large amounts from unknown places and sell them on local e-commerce sites or social media,” says Dr. Shalini Mehra, a toxicologist at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). “People are attracted by the low prices and elegant packaging, but they don’t realize they are using poison.”

Health officials are advising people to be careful with product labels. Ingredients like calomel, cinnabaris, hydrargyrum, or quicksilver are signs that a product has mercury. Even warnings like “avoid contact with jewelry or metal” can mean the product contains mercury.

Around the world, the Minamata Convention on Mercury, signed by over 140 countries, stops the making, importing, and exporting of cosmetics that have more than 1 part per million (ppm) of mercury.

In 2024, many groups like the Zero Mercury Working Group (ZMWG) tested over 200 products sold online and found that almost half had unsafe levels of mercury. Despite many warnings, most governments have failed to stop online sellers from selling these products.

Elena Popovic, a spokesperson for ZMWG, said, “Global rules on cosmetic safety are still not keeping up with the fast-growing online trade.

Without better checks and stronger punishments for those breaking the rules, millions of people—especially young women—are still in danger.”

Cultural Pressure and the Myth of Fairness

Another big issue is the strong cultural belief that lighter skin is more beautiful and shows a higher social status. This idea makes fairness creams popular, even among well-educated people.

Experts say changing this belief is just as important as making the rules stricter. Psychologist Farah Siddiqui explains, “Real beauty has nothing to do with skin color. The idea that lighter skin is better is a leftover from colonial times and still hurts both health and how people see themselves.”

Campaigns such as “Dark Is Beautiful” in India and “My Melanin My Power” in Africa are now pushing back against these old ideas, helping people feel confident about their natural skin color and encouraging safer skincare products.

A Call for Safer Choices and Stronger Oversight

The World Health Organization (WHO) has asked many of the product companies to improve their border checks, test cosmetics that come in from other places, and teach people about the dangers of mercury poisoning. The WHO also suggests that local governments work closely with online shopping sites to stop the sale of unsafe products.

Dermatologists advise people to only use products approved by health experts and sold by trusted stores or well-known brands. Dr. Mehra says, “Before buying any beauty product, check the ingredients and make sure it has approval from your country’s health authority. No beauty product should ever hurt your health.”

People are also told to stop using any cream that causes redness, burning, or a metallic smell. If these symptoms continue, they should see a doctor and be tested for mercury poisoning.
