FazTimes Media, Kolkata – A fresh political storm is brewing in West Bengal as Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh issued a stern warning to the Election Commission of India (ECI), declaring that the party would launch a massive protest in Delhi if the name of even a single “legal voter” is removed from the state’s electoral rolls during the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

Speaking at a post-Durga Puja gathering — Vijaya Sammilani — in Ketugram, East Burdwan district, Ghosh announced that the party would not remain silent if voters are unfairly excluded from the rolls.

“If the name of even one legitimate voter is deleted, we will take one lakh people to Delhi and stage a protest right in front of the Election Commission’s office,” Ghosh declared to a cheering crowd. “Our Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, and our National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee are standing with the people of Bengal. Trinamool is not just a political party; it’s a family that protects democracy.”

According to BBC News, the Election Commission is preparing to begin the Special Intensive Revision process in West Bengal after October 15 to ensure accuracy in the voter lists ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. However, TMC leaders have alleged that the move could be politically motivated and designed to influence the upcoming polls.

Trinamool’s Allegations Against BJP

The TMC leader did not hold back his criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of trying to manipulate the voter list for political gain.

“Earlier, the BJP demanded central forces during the state elections, but even with their presence, they were defeated badly. Now, they’re using the voter list as a new weapon,” Ghosh said. “They have pressured the Election Commission and are trying to include the names of voters from other states. This is nothing but a planned conspiracy to weaken Bengal’s democracy.”

As reported by Al Jazeera, West Bengal has often been the center of heated electoral battles, with allegations of political bias and interference becoming a recurring theme. The BJP, which has made significant inroads in the state over the past decade, has argued that the revision is necessary to remove fake and illegal voters.

However, TMC leaders see it differently. Ghosh accused the BJP of “playing the Maharashtra and Delhi game” — referring to recent political developments in those states, where coalition shifts and defections changed governments. “They want to repeat that formula in Bengal, but Mamata Banerjee has already decoded their strategy,” he asserted.

The upcoming 2026 Assembly elections are crucial for both parties. For the Trinamool Congress, which has ruled Bengal since 2011, retaining power for a fourth consecutive term is about proving its continued dominance and defending regional pride. For the BJP, it’s an opportunity to expand its presence in one of India’s most politically charged states.

Kunal Ghosh exuded confidence about Trinamool’s prospects. “After 2026, Trinamool will form the government again, winning around 250 seats,” he declared. “There will be no change in the Chief Minister’s chair. The only change will be in the Leader of the Opposition — because the BJP will not even have enough MLAs to claim that position.”

His remarks reflect the party’s growing assertiveness following a series of local-level victories and bypoll wins that reaffirmed Mamata Banerjee’s popularity. Analysts believe Ghosh’s fiery speech is part of Trinamool’s broader campaign to mobilize grassroots workers ahead of the voter list revision and create public pressure on the Election Commission.

ECI’s Firm Stand on Procedure

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has made it clear that the SIR process will be conducted with full transparency and strict adherence to procedure.

In a recent directive, the Commission stated that no compromise will be made in the selection of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) — the officials responsible for verifying and maintaining the electoral rolls.

“Under no circumstances should political interference influence the appointment or functioning of election officials,” the ECI’s internal note reportedly said. The Commission aims to ensure that every eligible citizen’s name is included and that no fraudulent or duplicate entries remain in the system.

According to The Hindu, the Commission has also asked for additional vigilance in border districts and urban pockets, where the chances of voter duplication or migration-related discrepancies are higher.

However, TMC leaders claim that the timing and nature of the revision — so close to the Assembly elections — raise doubts about the Commission’s impartiality.

Battle for Public Trust

For ordinary voters in West Bengal, the ongoing war of words between the two major parties has sparked a mix of concern and confusion. Many fear that the political tug-of-war might result in genuine voters being left out of the rolls, especially in rural and semi-urban regions.

Residents in East Burdwan told FazTimes Media that they worry about the complexity of the verification process. “If names are deleted wrongly, it will be very difficult for poor villagers to get them back on time,” said Sukanta Roy, a farmer from Ketugram. “Politicians fight, but it’s the common man who suffers.”

For TMC, which thrives on its strong grassroots presence, maintaining public trust is vital. The party’s district units have already begun door-to-door campaigns to help citizens verify their names and submit correction forms if needed. “Our goal is to ensure that not a single genuine voter is deprived of their right,” Ghosh said.

BJP’s Counterattack

The BJP, however, has dismissed Trinamool’s allegations as “baseless theatrics.” State BJP spokesperson Samarendra Hazra told reporters that the ruling party’s protests are an attempt to “distract from its fear of losing ground.”

“Why is Trinamool so afraid of a fair revision?” Hazra asked. “The process is meant to remove fake voters and ensure transparency. Only those who depend on bogus votes would oppose it.”

According to Times Now, BJP leaders have accused TMC of trying to politicize an administrative process and have welcomed the Election Commission’s decision to maintain strict supervision.

The ongoing dispute highlights the deep-rooted mistrust between Bengal’s ruling and opposition parties. Analysts say the controversy isn’t just about names on a list — it’s about who controls the narrative ahead of the 2026 elections.

“Trinamool wants to frame this as a fight for democracy, while BJP wants to portray it as a battle for electoral integrity,” said political analyst Debraj Bhattacharya. “Both sides are mobilizing their base early, turning what should be a technical process into a political showdown.”

In the case of West Bengal, the issue strikes at the heart of its political identity — one fiercely protective of autonomy and deeply suspicious of central interference.

As the Election Commission prepares to begin the SIR process, Bengal’s political climate is expected to heat up further. Trinamool has already started building its protest infrastructure, while BJP cadres are intensifying outreach campaigns.
