And lots of others just aren't interested in getting medical insurance at all. It seems like people are shying away from something as important as health coverage. Back in 2021, around 514 million people in India had some kind of medical insurance. So, what's changed?

Premiums Getting Too High: For many, the biggest problem is that the cost of health insurance is going up and up, making it too expensive. They simply can't afford to pay the premiums anymore, so they're giving up their coverage. Also, many people don't know about the different insurance plans available, and they worry that even if they pay, they might not get the coverage they need. Meanwhile, people with lower incomes often see health insurance as just another cost they can't afford and stop paying.

Thinking Group Insurance is Enough: Often, when people and their families are covered by health insurance through their job, they decide to drop their own individual or family health insurance plans. But they don't always realize that when they change jobs, they'll lose that coverage. There's a common feeling in India that insurance companies don't give you benefits that are worth the amount you pay in premiums. Many people complain that what they get back doesn't match how much the health insurance plans cost.

Not Knowing the Benefits: Unlike other ways of saving money, many people are hesitant to spend on health insurance because if they don't get sick or have a medical emergency, they don't see any money or benefits coming back to them. This lack of understanding about how health insurance can help, and about the different plans available, is a big reason why it's becoming less popular in India. People who are poor or live in rural areas often don't know much about how medical insurance works and how it could help them if something serious happens.

Not Trusting Insurance Companies: A lot of people are unwilling to buy health insurance because they just don't trust the insurance companies. They worry that their claims will be rejected or that there will be long delays in getting their money. Plus, many are concerned that health insurance might not help them when they need it during an emergency. Some are also suspicious of hidden rules and regulations in the policies. People turn away from health insurance because they're not sure if certain plans cover specific illnesses or health problems they already have.

The complicated process of making a claim and the delays in getting it processed also discourage people from relying on health insurance. Those who don't have much money see health insurance as just another unnecessary expense. Meanwhile, the middle class finds the premiums, which keep increasing every year, too hard to afford. Unlike other savings plans, you don't get any financial returns on the money you pay for health insurance if you don't use it. However, if people understood the advantages of having health insurance, they probably wouldn't hesitate to pay the premiums.
